"In the fall of 2010, inclusion was identified as part of government’s Inspiring Action on Education initiative, and Setting the Direction was renamed Action on Inclusion to signal implementation of an inclusive education system." Alberta Education
While I was in school, students who had exceptionalities were all in the "resource" room with their aids or caregivers. Many people found this idea of isolation morally wrong. The idea of inclusive classrooms is that those students are taken from the resource room and put in classrooms with the rest of the student population. This would promote community, provide socialization in areas such as disability, and promote equality. The issue with this is that shortly after the inclusive education system was put into place, funding toward education was reduced by millions. This left teachers with a class full of students including 3-6 needing aids yet the money wasn't there for aids anymore so they were now the teachers sole responsibility. As if teachers weren't stressed enough! Differentiated instruction was in place prior to inclusive education yet it is now more than ever, a crucial part of instruction. The most important thing to teachers is their students and their needs. Individualizing these needs is the best way for them to be met, thus differentiation strategies. Whether our students are gifted, have physical limitations, or just learn best with their hands, differentiated instruction is key!

What do you think about the inclusive education act? Are we asking too much of our teachers? Should it be revoked? Please comment!
